چکیده

Numerical simulations of water ̄ow and solute transport were used to investigate the e€ect of the recharge (rain/irrigation) at the soil surface on solute spreading and breakthrough in a realistic, three-dimensional, heterogeneous, vadose zone±groundwater ̄ow system. Results of the analyses suggest that smaller recharge at the soil surface increases the relative variability in the response of the unsaturated ̄ow system, decreases the groundwater recharge from the unsaturated zone, and, concurrently, decreases the degree of nonuniformity of the groundwater ̄ow. Consequently, smaller recharge at the soil surface enhances the longitudinal and, especially the transverse spreading of the solute plume and increases the spreading of the expected solute BTC at the lower boundary of the unsaturated zone. Furthermore, smaller recharge at the soil surface decreases the extent of the vertical penetration of the solute plume into the groundwater, slows the peak arrival of the expected BTC, and considerably increases the spreading of the expected solute BTC at a given vertical control plane in the saturated region. It was shown that for the combined ̄ow system considered here in which the solute plume is displaced to a suciently large vertical distance from the inlet zone at the soil surface, the variable that controls the transport is the cumulative recharge at the soil surface, and not the recharge rate. Risk assessment of industrial hydrocarbon release and transport in the vadose zone as it travels to groundwater table: A case study

In this paper, a modeling tool for risk assessment analysis of the movement of hydrocarbon contaminants in the vadose zone and mass flux of contamination release into the groundwater table was developed. Also, advection-diffusion-reaction equations in combination with a three-phase equilibrium state between trapped air, soil humidity, and solid particles of unsaturated soil matrix were numerica...

Numerical Modeling of Water Flow and Contaminant (Nitrates) Transport in Agriculture: Review

Water movement in soils is a key process that aff ects water quantity and quality in the environment. Movement of contaminants in soils is closely linked with the soil water fl ux and it is very important to properly evaluate these processes that occur in vadose zone. With development of new technologies more attention is dedicated to the use of numerical models to assess water fl ow behavior a...

Simulating Groundwater Transport Process Using a Vertical Heterogeneity Model: A Case Study

It is important to simulate a groundwater transport process, e.g., pollutant migration, through the vadose zone and subsequent mixing within the saturated zone to assess potential impacts of contaminants in the subsurface in preliminary stages. It is challenging to simulate heterogeneous soil characteristics and non-uniform initial contaminant concentration. This paper proposes a vertically het...

Analysis of Field-scale Salinization: a Comparison of Different Modeling Approaches

Soil and groundwater salinization are major problems for irrigated agriculture in many arid and semiarid areas of the world. Studies addressing such problems require accurate estimation of salt loadings from irrigated areas through the vadose zone to underlying groundwater. We studied Cl transport in the vadose zone at 45 locations in a field in the San Joaquin Valley, California, through a com...
